Ashram Series Review: Story & Performances

Director Prakash Jha made his debut on the OTT platform with the web series "Aashram." The story begins with a scene where a young girl is seen beating the warden of a hostel.

In the next scene, two girls, one from a high-society background and the other from a Dalit family engage in a wrestling match. Although Pammi (played by Aaditi Pohankar) wins the match, the referee declares a foul due to her Dalit background and awards the trophy to Sangeeta.

In another incident, a groom from a Dalit family wishes to ride a horse to the bride's home, emulating the high-society people. While passing through the high-society area, Pammi's brother Satti (played by Tushar Pandey) and others are brutally beaten. They go to the local police station to file a complaint, but SI Ujagar Singh (Darshan Kumaar) warns them of the danger they might face for lodging an attempt to murder complaint.

The high-society people influence the doctor not to treat Satti, but Baba Nirala Kashipur Wala (played by Bobby Deol) intervenes and resolves the incident. Baba's right-hand man, Bhopa (played by Chandan Roy Sanyal), executes plans and oversees major activities at the Ashram.

Pammi and then her brother Satti decide to become devotees of Babaji. Satti is assigned the task of marrying a prostitute named Bobita (played by Tridha Choudhury), initially refusing but eventually agreeing. Unbeknownst to Satti, he falls into Babaji's trap.

During the construction work of Mishra Global Projects Private Limited, a skeleton is discovered and sent for investigation. Forensic specialist Dr. Natasha (played by Anupriya Goenka) determines that it is the skeleton of a girl who was brutally murdered. Ujagar Singh is drawn to Natasha's beauty and honesty and decides to find the culprits behind the unidentified girl's murder.

Babaji approaches modern pop singer Teenka Singh (played by Adhyayan Suman) to become a devotee for political gains, but Teenka rejects the proposal. Later, Teenka is arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau for drug use, a conspiracy orchestrated by Babaji to bring Teenka under his influence.

Director Prakash Jha delivers his usual best in "Aashram." Known for his films like "Gangajal," "Rajneeti," and "Apaharan," he brings his effective storytelling to the digital platform, and hopefully, he will continue to provide us with wonderful content in the future.

Bobby Deol's presence makes a significant difference in 'Aashram' Season 1. He portrays the character of a Godman beautifully and has already impressed us with his performance in the recently released film 'Class Of 83.'

Aaditi Pohankar, who delivered a powerful performance in the web series "She," offers strong support to the cast in her role as a Dalit girl and wrestler in "Aashram."

Chandan Roy Sanyal also delivers a noteworthy performance, following his strong performance in "Avrodh." Darshan Kumaar and Vikram Kochchar do a commendable job in their respective roles.

Anupriya Goenka, Tridha Choudhury, Tushar Pandey, and Adhyayan Suman justify their roles with spectacular performances.

The season 1 of this series is available for streaming on MX Player.
