Chhalaang (2020) Review: Story & Performances
A Few Bollywood Actor-Director pairs have made our movie-watching experience more amazing.
One such pair is Rajkummar Rao-Hansal Mehta. Some of their best movies together are Sahid, City Lights, Aligarh, Omerta, and now Chhalaang.
After the grand success of Scam 1992, Hansal Mehta came up with this sports-drama genre movie.
The story revolves around Mahinder Singh aka Montu (Rajkummar Rao), a PT teacher in a local school, where he also studied in his childhood days.
His father’s (Satish Kaushik) recommendation to the Principal(Ila Arun) helped him in getting the job.
Montu gets lots of support and guidance from his retired school teacher Shukla(Saurabh Shukla). Other than his parents he has a younger brother Bablu(Naman Jain).
Things changed when Neelima (Nushrratt Bharuccha) joined as a Computer science teacher. Montu couldn’t stop himself and fell in love with Neelima. Unfortunately, he had harassed her Parents in a local park.
Montu realizes his guilt and apologizes to Neelima but she doesn’t accept his apology. He tried to impress her in many ways to get closer to her.
Finally, she accepts his apologies and they become friends. Everything was going well until the new PT coach I.M Singh (Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub) joined the school.
Montu was offered to assist Singh and his salary will be also the same as before. Singh and Neelima both were from the same college so they sometimes talk to each other. Singh sometimes dropped her off at school.
Montu was becoming quite jealous as well as insecure. Neelima suggests he continues the job because it will help his career growth.
Montu agreed and informed the Principal to accept the offer. Singh repeatedly pointed out Montu’s inexperience in every student’s bad performance.
Finally, Montu offered the Principal the idea giving of the two different teams, and after training for one month, both teams would compete against each other.
The winning team’s coach should be selected as the senior coach. The Principal rejected Montu’s proposal initially. Then Shukla discussed with the Principal and convinced her of the proposal.
Sometimes we learn about our powers, strengths, and weaknesses when we get challenges from a more competent person. That is something we can learn from the Chhalaang Movie.
Director Hansal Mehta delivered again with a narrative story-telling. Chhalaang started well with a few romantic scenes and finished with the serious competition held between the two teams.
Whether it is about winning a competition or the audience’s hearts Rajkummar Rao is always there. He is raising the bar higher with every movie.
Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub also provided a notable performance. Nushrratt Bharuccha, Saurabh Shukla, Ila Arun, Satish Kaushik, and Naman Jain contributed well with their respective characters.
