Shamshera (2022) Review: Story, Performances & Analysis

The story of Shamshera is based on the Khameran tribe who once lived in Rajputana jungles. When the Mughals defeated Rajputana, Khamerans had to leave their place & they were driven into exile to Kaza in North India. The caste division was one of the biggest problems during that time when the British were ruling India.

Just when their existence was in danger Shamshera(Ranbir Kapoor) brought back the glory of Khamerans. But their glorious time doesn’t last for long as Shamshera had to sacrifice his life to save the lives of the Khamerans.

Shuddh Singh, a Police officer (Sanjay Dutt) helps the British continue their barbaric physical torture on the Khamerans. Shamshera’s son Balli (also Ranbir Kapoor) was unaware of his father’s sacrifice and always considers his father a traitor until he came to know about the truth from Pir Baba(Ronit Roy).

Balli’s journey started to finish the incomplete task of his father & save the Khamerans from Shuddh Singh and the British. He was accompanied by Shamshera’s friend (Saurabh Shukla) to accomplish the mission.

Shamshera seems like one of the biggest disappointments from Ranbir Kapoor. After delivering a blockbuster like Sanju 4 years back, a disaster like Shamshera should make him more careful while choosing a script.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera character was short and effective compared to Balli who had maximum screen presence yet failed to leave a long-lasting impression.

Sanjay Dutt’s character looked almost similar to what he had done in KGF chapter 2.  Talented performers like Vaani Kapoor, Ronit Roy, and Saurabh Shukla went completely underutilized as they had almost nothing in the script.

Shamshera is Karan Malhotra’s 3rd directorial movie after Agneepath starring Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, and Priyanka Chopra & Brothers starring Akshay Kumar, Sidharth Malhotra, and Jacqueline Fernandez.

Karan Malhotra certainly will not be happy with the kind of response he received for Shamshera but we have already seen enough period drama movies in Bollywood. So, if you are failing to give sufficient focus on the script to make it unique and give audiences the best cinematic experience there is no use in making them.

Final Words

We can conclude the Shamshera review with a one-liner- neither the storyline was impressive nor the storytelling. Only if you are a die-hard fan of Ranbir Kapoor then certainly you can go and watch his maiden period drama movie with a few good visuals and action sequences.
