Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) Review: Story, Performances & Analysis
The movie started with a train journey of Laal Singh Chaddha(Aamir Khan) to Chandigarh where he started telling his story without caring whether his co-passengers are really interested or not.
He took a box full of gol-gappas out of his bag and started eating it. And, no it is not the same gol-gappas that Akshay Kumar was selling in his shop in the movie Raksha Bandhan. LOL. His life was surrounded by two of his most loved people first his mother Gurpreet Kaur (Mona Singh) and second, it was his childhood friend Rupa(Kareena Kapoor Khan).
His life was not like other children of his age. He used to wear leg braces in his childhood and a talented child like him taught today’s superstar Shah Rukh Khan a few dance moves. A young Laal(Ahmad Ibn Umar) was very happy when he first met Rupa in school. They used to spend a lot of time together and became very good friends.
One day, while he was walking with Rupa 3 children with bicycles on the road, started throwing stones at him and he had to run away to save himself from them. During the run, his braces got removed and that was the day he discovered his talent in fast running. He proposed to Rupa quite a few times to get married to him but she never responded.
Later he joined the Indian army where he met Bala (Naga Chaitanya). They became good friends over time. Laal Singh showed compassion during the Kargil war. Rupa also went to Mumbai to become a top actress and earn money.
Will Rupa ever come back to Laal Singh’s life again? We get the answer in the second half of the story.
It’s true that no one could have portrayed the titular character better than Aamir Khan in Bollywood. But at times the character Laal Singh Chaddha looked very similar to his character in director Rajkumar Hirani’s movie PK.
We can say that Laal Singh Chaddha is a good comeback by Aamir Khan after a disastrous Thugs of Hindostan. The childhood scenes of young Laal Singh and young Rupa are the sweetest as well as the best part of this movie. With the original screenplay by Eric Routh, writer Atul Kulkarni added his elements to make the narrative more interesting.
Director Advait Chandan made his directorial debut back in 2017 with the movie Secret Superstar & earned accolades of the most promising director. Getting the opportunity to direct Bollywood’s perfectionist in his second directorial movie is a massive boost for his career. The narrative looked stretched and boring in parts & his direction skill certainly needs to be improved while directing the top stars of Bollywood.
Kareena Kapoor Khan was a good fit for Rupa’s character while Mona Singh as Laal Singh Chaddha’s mother delivered a brilliant performance. Naga Chaitanya and Manav Vij did good justice to their respective characters.
Final Words
If you are going to watch Laal Singh Chaddha forgetting about Tom Hanks’s Forest Gump only then you will find it worthy, though the movie is not a frame-to-frame copy of the original movie.
