Jaane Jaan (2023) on Netflix Review: Story & Performances
Jaane Jaan centers around three key characters: Naren Vyas (played by Jaideep Ahlawat), a mathematics teacher; Maya D'Souza aka Soniya D'Souza (portrayed by Kareena Kapoor), a single mother; and police officer Karan Anand (played by Vijay Varma).
In his quest to locate the missing ASI Ajit Mhatre (Saurabh Sachdeva), Inspector Karan Anand arrives in Kalimpong. There, he discovers that Ajit's estranged wife, Maya D'Souza, works at a café named Tiffin and that they were separated before their daughter Tara D'Souza (played by Naisha Khanna) was born. Karan also learns of Ajit's murder and embarks on an investigation to uncover the truth behind his death. Will Karan succeed in solving the mystery and identifying the killer?
Jaane Jaan shares some similarities with the plot of Drishyam, as both stories are based on the novel "The Devotion of Suspect X" by Keigo Higashino. However, director Sujoy Ghosh, who also wrote the screenplay, has made significant changes to make it more captivating.
It's a welcome return to form for writer and director Sujoy Ghosh, who had not delivered a high-quality thriller in quite some time. While "Jaane Jaan" may not reach the level of "Kahaani," which earned critical acclaim, it is an engaging thriller that checks most of the boxes for a successful suspense thriller.
Jaideep Ahlawat steals the show with an exceptional performance, portraying Naren Vyas, a brilliant mathematician and introvert who struggles to express his feelings. The scene where Kareena Kapoor Khan went to meet him in jail was a perfect one. Ahlawat has previously delivered solid performances in "Paatal Lok" and "Commando".
Vijay Varma as Karan delivers a top-notch performance, continuing to improve with each project since his breakout role in Gully Boy. His performances in Mirzapur, Dahaad, Yaara, Kaalkoot, She, and Darlings are all noteworthy.
His fight scene with his friend and the scene, when he met with Kareena Kapoor in a cafe & ate dragon momos, were praiseworthy. He is set to appear in upcoming films like Murder Mubarak and Afghaani Snow.
Kareena Kapoor Khan, in her OTT debut as Maya D'Souza, delivers a convincing performance. It has been over a year since her last release, "Laal Singh Chaddha," and the actress is set to appear in The Buckingham Murders and The Crew.
The background score by Shor Police and the martial arts designs by Prateek & Parmar deserve special mention. Urvashi Saxena's editing could have made the first half of the film more engaging, and Avik Mukhopadhyay's cinematography is praiseworthy.
The film is produced by Jay Shewakramani, Akshai Puri, Hyunwoo Thomas Kim, Shobha Kapoor, and Ekta R Kapoor, with dialogues written by Sujoy Ghosh and Raj Vasant.
Jaane Jaan is not the first film to share its title with a hit song, joining the ranks of Monica, O My Darling, Meri Pyaari Bindu, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Raat Akeli Hai, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, and Haseen Dillruba.
Sachin Jigar has composed the music for the film, with the original song Aa Jaane Jaa composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Somnath Kundu, known for his makeup artistry in films like Gumnaami, Aparajito, and Indubala Bhaater Hotel, has done an excellent job with the prosthetic makeup for Jaideep Ahlawat's character.
Jaane Jaan is an engaging thriller on Netflix that is worth watching during your weekend schedule, thanks to Sujoy Ghosh's brilliant direction and screenplay, as well as solid performances from Jaideep Ahlawat, Vijay Varma, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
