Bagha Jatin (2023) Bengali Movie Review:
Arun Roy's period drama, Bagha Jatin, directed by Arun Roy, hit the theaters on October 19, 2023. The film faced strong competition from other releases, including Srijit Mukherji’s Dawshom Awbotaar, Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s Raktabeej, and Arindam Sil’s Jongole Mitin Mashi.
The movie revolves around the life of Jatindranath Mukhopadhyay, an Indian independence activist who played a pivotal role in the fight against British rule in India.
Arun Roy, known for his storytelling prowess in films like "Hiralal," "8/12 Binay Badal Dinesh," and "Egaro: The Immortal XI," once again showcases his narrative skills in "Bagha Jatin." Despite a slight pacing issue in the second half, the film impresses with its portrayal of various aspects of Jatindranath Mukhopadhyay's life, including his revolutionary activities and contributions to the Jugantar party.
Dev, in the role of Jatindranath Mukhopadhyay (Bagha Jatin), delivers a standout performance. The Tollywood superstar consistently embraces new challenges in each of his projects, as seen recently in his portrayal of Byomkesh Bakshi in "Byomkesh O Durgo Rahasya."
Debutant Sreeja Dutta, who plays Bagha Jatin's wife, Indubala, delivers a convincing performance, particularly commendable for someone making their big-screen debut. Sudipta Chakraborty, portraying Bagha Jatin's elder sister Binodbala, delivers as expected, and Carl A. Harte, in the role of Charles Tegart, leaves a strong impression.
Other notable contributions come from Rohaan Bhattacharjee as Chittapriya Ray Chaudhury, Samiul Alam as Kshudiram Bose, Sajal Mondal as Arabindo Ghose, and Alexandra Taylor.
The action directors, Rajesh Kannan and Krishnendu Ghosh deserve praise for their execution of the action sequences. However, Arun Roy and Sounava Bose's screenplay could have been more polished. Sounava Bose's dialogues, on the other hand, receive well-deserved accolades.
Once again, Nilayan Chatterjee captivates with his music composition and background score. Gopi Bhagat's cinematography and MD Kalam's editing are commendable. However, the film's most disappointing aspect is its VFX, particularly in the scene where Jatindranath Mukhopadhyay battles and defeats a tiger. Due to subpar VFX, the execution falls short of expectations.
Bagha Jatin is worth a single trip to the theaters, thanks to Arun Roy's exceptional storytelling, Dev's performance, and Nilayan Chatterjee's impressive BGM and music composition.
