Chhotolok (2023) Review: Best Bengali Crime Thriller of 2023
The plot revolves around the mysterious death of aspiring model Rupsha (Ushasi Ray), making Raja Bhattacharya (Gaurav Chakrabarty) the prime suspect as he was having an affair with her. Raja is married to Mallika Das (Priyanka Sarkar) and is the son of powerful politician Mohor Bhattacharya (Indrani Halder). SI Sabitri Mondal (Daminee Benny Basu) has been assigned the task of resolving Rupsha’s death mystery. Will Sabitri Mondal be able to find out the killer?
Indranil Roychowdhury, making his debut with this series, has left a long-lasting impression with his storytelling. He took sufficient time to develop each character, showing the backstory to justify their present actions. You may have one complaint about the slow pace of the series, but the rest of the aspects were up to the mark.
The tight writing of the script by Sugata Sinha & Indranil Roychowdhury was the most important aspect of the Chhotolok web series. You will see the arrival of a new character in the script just when there is a need for it. Even the revelation of each crucial piece of information to solve the mystery was almost perfect.
Daminee Benny Basu is stunning as SI Sabitri Mondal. This is certainly the best performance in her career to date. Her character was given the maximum focus, and her investigation looked very natural. Numerous scenes showcase her sharp mind and fearless demeanor, leaving a lasting impression. She previously appeared in Ardhangini and Bonyo Premer Golpo but did not leave much impact.
Indrani Halder as Mohor Bhattacharya delivers a remarkable performance. From being a mother who goes to any step to see her son safe to showing her political power, she looks convincing throughout the series. Last year, she appeared in the family drama Kuler Achaar.
Priyanka Sarkar as Mallika Das delivers one of the finest performances in her career. This is certainly a more mature performance than what she delivered earlier in her career. Expectations for her upcoming series Lojja on Hoichoi will be quite high.
The actor Gaurav Chakrabarty remained mostly underutilized in his career, recently he delivered a superb performance in Director Raj Chakraborty’s Abar Proloy. Director Indranil Roychowdhury understood his potential and utilized his character perfectly. I hope he will keep doing the good work in Parambrata Chatterjee’s horror thriller Parnashavarir Shaap too.
Ushasi Ray as Rupsha looks convincing. Sumit Samadder, Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, & Joydeep Mukherjee also contributed well with their cameos. Loknath Dey as Farookh looks okay. Pratik Dutta as Sabitri’s assistant in the investigation justified his character. Subhrajit Dutta as Sabitri’s husband provided good support.
Gaurab Gaboo Chatterjee’s music and background score, Amit Ray’s editing, & Indranil Mukherjee’s cinematography were also up to the mark.
Yes, without a second thought, I can say that Chhotolok on ZEE5 is the best Bengali crime thriller to be released in 2023 till date. The series premiered on ZEE5 on 3rd November 2023.
