Dunki (2023) Movie Trailer Review: Will SRK-Hirani's collaboration beat Prabhas-Prasanth Neel's collaboration?
On December 5, 2023, Bollywood's King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, unveiled the trailer for his highly-anticipated film, Dunki directed by Rajkumar Hirani.
The 3-minute trailer (Drop 4) kicks off with the journey of Hardayal Hardy Singh Dhillon (played by Shah Rukh Khan) in 1995 from Laltu, Punjab, where he meets four friends: Manu (Tapsee Pannu), Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal), Anil Grover as Balli (Anil Grover), and Buggu Lakhanpal (Vikram Kochhar), all aspiring to go to London.
Balli works at a salon, Buggu at a garment shop, Sukhi struggles with English, and Manu means the world to Hardy. Boman Irani, as Gulati (Boman Irani), the English teacher, promises to help the friends get to London if they improve their English. Recognizing their limitations, the 4 friends decide to embark on the journey to London. Will they reach their destination overcoming every obstacle?
The film marks Rajkumar Hirani’s 6th directorial venture, making a comeback after five years since the release of the Ranbir Kapoor-starring Sanju.
SRK has already delivered two massive hits this year, including Pathaan and Jawan, and made a cameo appearance in Salman Khan's Tiger 3. With high expectations, it will be interesting to see how close Dunki, a comedy-drama film clashing with Prabhas-starring Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire, can match the success of his previous two hits this year.
Dunki, produced by Gauri Khan, Rajkumar Hirani, & Jyoti Deshpande under the banners Jio Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, & Rajkumar Hirani Films, has been written by Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani & Kanika Dhillon. Pritam composed the music, Muraleedharan C. K. handled the cinematography, while Rajkumar Hirani himself edited the film, and Aman Pant scored the background music.
This is Vicky Kaushal’s fourth film this year after Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, The Great Indian Family, & Sam Bahadur. It is Taapsee Pannu’s second film of the year after Dhak Dhak. This marks Boman Irani’s first film of 2023, Dia Mirza’s third film after Bheed, and Dhak Dhak, and the legendary Dharmendra’s second film after Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Various factors suggest that the comedy-drama Dunki could become SRK's third box office blockbuster of 2023 and give tight competition to Prabhas-Prasanth Neel's maiden collaboration.
1. The immense craze SRK has generated among movie lovers with his comeback in the action thriller Pathaan and continued success with Atlee's Jawan, showcasing the unmatched stardom of King Khan.
2. Director Rajkumar Hirani’s last three films crossed a minimum of Rs 300 crores at the box office (3 Idiots in 2009 - more than Rs 400 crores worldwide, PK in 2014 - more than Rs 700 crores worldwide, Sanju in 2018 - more than Rs 500 crores worldwide).
