Director Joydeep Mukherjee’s mystery thriller Kaantaye Kaantaye premiered on ZEE5 on 15th August 2024. The story, adapted from Narayan Sanyal’s Sonar Kanta, takes inspiration from Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap.
Advocate PK Basu (Saswata Chatterjee) wins the high-profile Ketan Agarwal murder case, where Nayan Samanta fails to prove his innocence and is found guilty of Agarwal’s death. This conviction leads to Nayan Samanta’s life sentence and eventual suicide in jail, leaving behind a note.
Several individuals connected to the case including Judge Ramesh Majumder, S.I. Ramen Guha (Subrat Dutta), and Malay Dutta (Subhrajit Dutta) are murdered. The series follows PK Basu as he unravels the mystery behind these killings.
Saswata Chatterjee's performance as Advocate PK Basu is the standout element of this thriller. He effortlessly navigates the complexities of the investigation, portraying PK Basu's character with a sharp mind and an unyielding quest for justice. His ability to balance professional obligations with personal grief, all while consoling his wife, Rani, is deeply moving. Chatterjee’s nuanced portrayal of layered emotions, delivered with restraint and authenticity, makes his performance compelling.
Ananya Chatterjee, playing Rani, delivers a solid performance, particularly excelling in emotional scenes that depict her struggle with the absence of their daughter. The National Film Award-winning actress returns to the OTT space after a two-year hiatus since her last appearance in Murder By The Sea. Kaantaye Kaantaye marks her third web series since debuting with Mohomaya in 2021.
Kinjal Nanda’s performance is decent, with notable expressions and body language, though his dialogue delivery falls short. Subrat Dutta, as Ramen Guha, provides a valuable contribution to the series. Rachel White, making her return to Bengali OTT after four years since Mismatch 3, has little to do within the script.
Actors like Somraj Maity, Ayoshi Talukdar, Kinjal Nanda, Paayel Sarkar, Soham Chakraborty, Mir Afsar Ali, Prantik Banerjee, and Subhrajit Dutta are underutilized, offering routine performances without much distinction.
Indraadip Dasgupta’s music composition is adequate, while the screenplay by Padmanabha Dasgupta struggles to maintain engagement. Maloy Laha’s editing may disappoint, with the series suffering from unnecessary scenes that could have been trimmed to improve pacing. However, Sovon Mukherjee’s background score is impressive.
The cinematography by Souvik Basu and Ramyadip Saha beautifully captures the scenic beauty of North Bengal. Despite this, poor character development and excessive dragging in parts highlight the flaws in Joydeep Mukherjee’s direction, leading to an uneven execution.
Overall, Kaantaye Kaantaye is a decent one-time watch on ZEE5, buoyed by Saswata Chatterjee's commendable performance.
