Parineeta Bengali Web Series Review: Debchandrima Singha Roy is the Show Stealer

Aditi Roy's directorial web series Parineeta, starring Debchandrima Singha Roy, Gaurav Chakrabarty, Arpan Ghoshal, Lokenath Dey, Pushpita Mukherjee, Debdut Ghosh, and Mimi Dutta, premiered on the OTT platform Hoichoi on August 15, 2024.

Adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel, the story revolves around the love triangle between Lalita (Debchandrima Singha Roy), Shekhar (Gaurav Chakrabarty), and Girin (Arpan Ghoshal). The novel has been adapted multiple times in various languages, so how the story is narrated to the audience is crucial. Aditi Roy excels in executing this with utmost care. From set design to costume design, and from art direction to music composition, Parineeta checks all the boxes. The climax is the best and most enjoyable part of this series.

Debchandrima Singha Roy, as Lalita, is the epitome of grace and resilience. She portrays Lalita's innocence and strength with such authenticity that you can't help but be drawn into her world. Over time, Debchandrima has clearly worked hard to improve her performance. Once again, she proves that she has immense potential, and if given a strong character, she will not disappoint.

Debchandrima's on-screen chemistry with Gaurav Chakrabarty is another major highlight of the series. Their connection feels natural and heartfelt, honoring the spirit of the original work while deepening the story's emotional impact.

Gaurav Chakrabarty delivers one of the finest performances of his career. He brings remarkable depth to the character of Shekhar, capturing his internal struggles and complexities with finesse. His performance is powerful and nuanced, perfectly embodying the essence of a man torn between love and societal expectations.

Gaurav Chakrabarty has come a long way in selecting the right scripts in recent years, following his debut in Kaushik Ganguly's Rang Milanti in 2011. Expectations are high for his upcoming projects like Sonar Kellay Jawker Dhan, Ekti Khunir Sondhane Mitin, and Saralakkha Holmes.

Arpan Ghoshal’s portrayal of Girin is truly commendable, even with limited screen time. He brings quiet strength and integrity to the character, making Girin a figure of unwavering support and genuine kindness. Arpan's performance beautifully captures the essence of Girin’s selfless love and moral fortitude, offering a powerful contrast to the more conflicted characters in the story.

Mimi Dutta, as Shekhar's sister-in-law, delivers a fine performance. Her scenes with both Shekhar and Lalita are enjoyable. Debdut Ghosh, as Lalita's uncle Gurucharan, Abhijit Guha as the station master, Loknath Dey as Shekhar's father Nabin Roy, and Pushpita Mukherjee as Shekhar's mother also provide praiseworthy performances.

Indraadip Dasgupta's music beautifully enhances the emotional depth of the narrative. His background score seamlessly blends with the storyline, evoking the perfect mood in each scene.

The casting is another high point of this series. Debchandrima Singha Roy has impressed in recent projects like Preme Pora Baron and Boomerang, Gaurav Chakrabarty has delivered impactful performances in Abar Proloy and Chhotolok, and Arpan Ghoshal has garnered praise for his roles in Hostel Days, Basanta Ese Gyachhe, Antormahal, Raja Rani Romeo, and Athhoi. Bringing these three promising actors together and drawing the best out of them is a testament to Aditi Roy's directorial prowess.

Ramyadip Saha’s cinematography is impressive, but Subhajit Singha’s editing is disappointing. The series could have been wrapped up in five episodes instead of six, as the last three episodes contain repetitive and unnecessarily stretched scenes.

Overall, Aditi Roy’s Parineeta is a well-executed, performance-driven romantic drama on Hoichoi, featuring stunning performances from Debchandrima Singha Roy, Gaurav Chakrabarty, and Arpan Ghoshal, along with Indraadip Dasgupta's top-notch music and background score.
