Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (2024) Movie Review: Sunny Kaushal Steals the Show

After the grand success of director Vinil Mathew’s romantic thriller Haseen Dillruba in 2021, the sequel titled Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba, starring Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, and Sunny Kaushal was released on Netflix on August 9, 2024. Jimmy Sheirgill is a new addition to the cast, alongside Sunny Kaushal in this film directed by Jayprad Desai.

The story picks up where it left off, with Rani (Taapsee Pannu), a beautician, and Rishu (Vikrant Massey), a delivery boy, living separately in Agra to evade the police. They plan to leave the country permanently for Thailand within two months, prompting Rishu to contact a travel agent. Abhimanyu (Sunny Kaushal), a physician who regularly visits Rani’s landlady to administer injections, falls for Rani at first sight.

A.C.P. Kishore Rawat (Aditya Srivastava) and his team, led by Inspector Mrityunjay Paswan, aka Monty (Jimmy Sheirgill), suspect that Rani is in contact with Rishu and begin to follow her. To divert the police from Rishu, Rani decides to marry Abhimanyu. Will Rishu and Rani manage to escape to Thailand? Will Inspector Mrityunjay and his team succeed in arresting Rishu?

The film starts strong with an engaging first half. Sunny Kaushal is the standout performer, captivating the audience with his romantic dialogues and intense love for Rani from the moment he appears on screen. His character's transformation throughout the narrative is impressive, though it could have been more compelling with a deeper backstory. The Shiddat fame actor has clearly honed his acting skills.

Taapsee Pannu as Rani and Vikrant Massey as Rishu deliver routine performances. Unfortunately, Vikrant Massey’s character suffers from poor writing, with little to offer in the second half after a promising start. The same applies to Taapsee Pannu’s character.

Both Jimmy Sheirgill and Aditya Srivastava’s characters are underdeveloped, with the investigation aspect of the film receiving minimal attention. The weakest element of Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba is the poorly written script, which is overloaded with twists that diminish the interest. The police investigation scenes might even evoke laughter for their implausibility.

In one particular scene, the police team led by Kishore Rawat visits Poonam (Bhumika Dube) to ask if she knows Ritu. Instead of answering immediately, Poonam goes inside her room and returns after some time to say she does not. A more discerning police team would have questioned why she took so long or went inside just to say no, but instead, they simply left without further inquiry.

Director Jayprad Desai fails to address key areas that could have improved the film's execution. There was significant room for improvement in Kanika Dhillon’s writing and Hemal Kothari’s editing. The music composition by Sachet-Parampara and Anurag Saikia also falls short of expectations. The romantic thriller Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba on Netflix is a decent watch, but it undoubtedly fails to live up to the expectations set by Haseen Dillruba.
