Sukumar's directorial action drama film Nannaku Prematho turned 9 years. The film was produced by B. V. S. N. Prasad under the banner of Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and distributed by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Films.
The film starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Jagapathi Babu, Rajendra Prasad, and Rakul Preet Singh, in the lead roles, was released in theatres on 13th January 2016. Sukumar has written the screenplay while the story has been written by Story Sukumar and Hussain Sha Kiran.
Nannaku Prematho marked 6th directorial venture of Sukumar. He made his directorial debut with the romantic action film Arya starring Allu Arjun, Anu Mehta, Siva Balaji.

At the 64th Filmfare Awards South, the film received 7 nominations and won 3 awards. At the 2nd IIFA Utsavam, the film received 3 nominations and won 1 award.
At the 6th South Indian International Movie Awards, the film received 4 nominations and won 2 awards. At the Nandi Awards of 2016, the film received 10 nominations and won 2 awards.
With a worldwide gross collection of over Rs 87 crores, the film became the 5th highest-grossing Telugu film of 2016 trailing only Janatha Garage, Sarrainodu, Oopiri, and Dhruva.
