Upon reaching the village, she found Lata bound to a bamboo pole, the villagers preparing to burn her alive in blind devotion to their unquestioned ‘God,’ Janguru, who had condemned her as a witch. Can Pata defy their superstitions and rescue her before time runs out?
The survival thriller remains one of the most underexplored genres in the Bengali film industry, and director Nirjhar Mitra deserves immense credit for executing it with remarkable finesse ensuring an engaging experience for the audience almost throughout the 6 episodes.
Certain scenes stand out remarkably, particularly the intense moment when Janguru's son and sister enter the hospital, which is crafted so brilliantly that it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Mimi Chakraborty delivers a stellar performance, making her portrayal convincing from the very first scene to the last. Whether navigating emotionally charged moments or displaying unwavering determination to protect her sister, she excels effortlessly.
Since her commendable performance in Raktabeej, Mimi Chakraborty has been making strong script choices, as seen in Jaha Bolibo Shotto Bolibo and Alaap. With Raktabeej 2 on the horizon, expectations from her are bound to be higher.
Koushani Mukhopadhyay Zanjeen delivers a convincing portrayal of Lata, bringing depth to her character. Meanwhile, Biswajit Das, Shruti Das, and Sujit Kumar Burman offer solid support in their respective roles, enhancing the film’s overall impact.
Subhajit Singha’s crisp editing, Turja Ghosh’s striking cinematography, and Mainak Mazoomdar’s evocative music and background score stand out as the major highlights of this series, enhancing its overall impact.
The on-screen chemistry between Mimi Chakraborty and Koushani Mukhopadhyay Zanjeen lacked depth and could have been explored more effectively to enhance their dynamic. The character of Janguru was also not developed well.
Dainee is a well-crafted survival thriller, elevated by strong performances from Mimi Chakraborty and Koushani Mukhopadhyay Zanjeen, along with Nirjhar Mitra’s brilliant direction. The film effectively sheds light on the lingering superstitions surrounding witchcraft, which persist in many villages even in the 21st century.
